The basics

What is a StoryCode?

A StoryCode is a scannable image built around an encoded URL. It combines the function of a QR code with the visual impact of campaign creative, so instead of a grey square in the corner of an ad, the artwork itself is what people scan. Any standard phone camera reads it — there is no app to download.

How is StoryCodes different from a normal QR code generator?

Many QR code generators now offer custom colours, logos, dynamic links and basic analytics. StoryCodes goes further by transforming the code itself into campaign creative — a distinctive, scannable image designed to attract attention and invite interaction. Behind every StoryCode, our Experience Platform lets marketers update destinations, deliver different experiences based on context, and measure performance across campaigns, placements and experiences — without reprinting the creative.

Can I just make this with an AI image prompt?

Generative AI can produce an attractive image, but that does not make it reliably scannable. We combine AI models, advanced generation methods and dozens of adjustable parameters that balance the encoded structure against composition, contrast, visual detail and style — and then we test the result on real devices before it ships.

Do StoryCodes work with every phone?

Yes. A StoryCode is read by the standard camera app on iOS and Android, exactly like an ordinary QR code. Nothing needs to be installed and the visitor does not need an account.

Is it "StoryCodes", "Story Codes" or "Story Code"?

All the same thing. StoryCodes (also written Story Codes, or Story Code and StoryCode for a single one) is our name for the branded, scannable images described throughout this site. Use whichever spelling comes naturally.

QR code generator for advertising

Is StoryCodes a QR code generator?

Yes — but not a conventional one. StoryCodes generates distinctive, scannable images built around an encoded URL. It combines QR code functionality with campaign creative and connects every StoryCode to an Experience Platform developed for advertising.

Can StoryCodes generate QR codes for advertising campaigns?

Yes. StoryCodes is a QR code generator created specifically for advertising. StoryCodes can be integrated into billboards, connected TV Pause Ads, print campaigns, packaging, posters and other campaign creative without introducing a conventional black-and-white QR square.

What should advertisers look for in a QR code generator?

A QR code generator for advertising should offer more than visual customisation. Marketers should consider scannability, viewing distance, placement, dynamic destinations, contextual experiences, campaign management and measurement. StoryCodes brings these capabilities together in one platform.

Can a StoryCode replace a standard QR code?

Yes. A StoryCode performs the same fundamental function: people scan it with their smartphone to open a digital destination. The difference is that the code becomes part of the campaign artwork and is supported by a platform for managing and measuring what happens after the scan.

Are StoryCodes dynamic QR codes?

Yes. StoryCodes use a dynamic redirection layer, allowing marketers to update the destination or experience without changing the StoryCode itself. The printed or published creative can remain unchanged while the experience behind it evolves.

Can I change the URL after a StoryCode has been published?

Yes. You can redirect an existing StoryCode to a different landing page, product, offer or experience without reprinting or republishing the creative. This makes it possible to reuse a StoryCode across different phases of a campaign — or across entirely new campaigns.

Can I use the same StoryCode across different media channels?

Yes. A StoryCode can appear across connected TV, (D)OOH, print, packaging and other campaign surfaces. When detailed comparison between channels, creatives or placements is required, the campaign can also be configured so that the StoryCode used on each surface is slightly different — encoding a different URL per surface — so their performance can be measured separately.

Does StoryCodes use AI to generate QR codes?

StoryCodes developed its own tool. This uses multiple AI models, specialised generation methods and dozens of parameters to transform an encoded URL into campaign-ready artwork. The generation process balances visual freedom with the structure required for reliable scanning.

Scannability and production

How do you know a StoryCode will actually scan?

Every StoryCode is tested before delivery. We scan it with different devices and cameras, from different angles and distances, and under varying lighting conditions — and we take into account where it will appear, from a magazine held in someone’s hands to a billboard seen from across the street. If it underperforms, we adjust the design and test again.

What do you need from us to make one?

The destination URL, your brand assets and campaign creative, and the media formats and sizes it has to run in. The more we know about viewing distance and lighting — a lit bus shelter at night behaves differently from a printed page — the better we can tune the design.

Can you put a StoryCode on creative that is already finished?

Yes. A StoryCode can be added as an overlay on a completed campaign visual as a clear, eye-catching interactive layer, without rebuilding the original artwork. We can also produce branded QR codes in your colours and identity, or plain black-and-white QR codes that still connect to the Experience Platform.

Why do you prefer a short URL inside the code?

The longer the URL, the more data the code must encode, which creates a denser, noisier structure and leaves less room for creative freedom. A short link to the Experience Platform keeps the design open and the scan reliable — and it is what lets you change the destination later.

Channels and campaigns

What is a Pause Ad, and why does it suit a QR code?

A Pause Ad is a connected TV format shown when a viewer pauses the content themselves. Because the viewer chose to stop, the ad stays on screen as long as they want and their phone is already in reach — which makes it one of the few TV moments where scanning is genuinely easy. StoryCodes turns that paused frame into a scan and a measurable action.

Can StoryCodes be used for out-of-home and DOOH advertising?

Yes. Billboards, bus shelters, digital street panels, transit and station media all work. Because the destination lives on the Experience Platform, a digital out-of-home campaign can change what a scan opens by time of day, weather or location while the panel keeps running.

Can one campaign use the same code across every channel?

It can. Use one StoryCode across OOH, a magazine ad, packaging and a Pause Ad for a single shared experience and a combined view of engagement. If each channel needs something different, we create visually similar StoryCodes that each encode a different URL — consistent creative, channel-level analytics.

Can the experience match our programmatic audience targeting?

Yes. The experience after a scan can be aligned with the audience a campaign is targeting. Target sports fans during a tournament and lead them to athlete content; target travel intenders the following week and lead the same code to destination content. The targeting, the ad and the post-scan experience stay aligned while the StoryCode itself is unchanged.

Shoppable ads

How can a StoryCode turn an advertisement into a shoppable ad?

In the Experience Platform, you can connect the creative directly to a shopping experience. After scanning, people can discover featured products, explore a collection, claim an offer or continue directly to a product page, shopping cart or online store.

Can a StoryCode link directly to a product or shopping cart?

Yes. Depending on your ecommerce setup, a StoryCode can lead to a product page, curated collection, pre-filled shopping cart or another step in the purchase journey.

Where can StoryCodes be used to create shoppable ads?

StoryCodes can make connected TV Pause Ads, (D)OOH campaigns, billboards, print advertisements, product packaging and in-store displays shoppable. Anywhere audiences can see and scan a StoryCode can become an opportunity to shop.

Can the products or offers behind a shoppable ad be changed?

Yes. You can update where a StoryCode leads without changing or reprinting the campaign creative. This allows the same StoryCode to promote new products, offers or experiences over time.

Can one StoryCode show different shopping experiences?

Yes. A StoryCode can deliver different destinations or experiences based on factors such as campaign, time, location, language, device or other defined rules. This makes shoppable ads more relevant to the context of each scan.

Can StoryCodes work with our existing ecommerce platform?

If your ecommerce platform provides mobile-accessible product, collection or cart URLs, a StoryCode can direct shoppers there. More advanced or tailored shopping journeys can be created through our specialist partners or developed specifically for your campaign.

How can we measure the performance of shoppable ads?

StoryCodes can measure scans and campaign engagement, while UTM parameters and your existing analytics tools can track what visitors do after reaching your ecommerce environment. Purchases and other conversions can also be connected to StoryCodes when the required tracking or integration is implemented.

Measurement and data

What can we actually measure?

Every scan is captured with its time, location, channel or source and device, then reported by campaign, experience and placement. With GA4 integration and campaign tracking, scan traffic can be connected to what happens on your website afterwards — engagement and conversions — so offline placements contribute to your attribution.

Can we change what a code opens after the campaign is printed?

Yes, at any time. That is the point of routing the code through the Experience Platform: the printed artwork stays exactly as it is while the destination, the rules and the content behind it can all be updated.

Is this GDPR-compliant?

Scan measurement is designed to work without requiring personal data. Where an experience does collect personal data — a coupon that asks for an email address, for example — that collection is consented, purpose-limited and covered by our data processing terms. Contact us and we will walk your privacy team through the specifics.

Security and quishing

What is quishing?

Quishing is phishing carried out through a QR code. A malicious code may direct someone to a fraudulent website that imitates a trusted brand, asks for credentials or payment information, or attempts to install harmful software. Malicious codes can be distributed digitally or placed as stickers over legitimate codes in physical locations.

Can StoryCodes prevent quishing?

No QR format can completely prevent phishing. StoryCodes can, however, reduce the risk of certain physical quishing attacks. Because the code is integrated into distinctive campaign imagery, covering it with an ordinary QR sticker is more likely to disrupt the design and attract attention. Audiences can also verify the destination domain shown by their phone before opening it.

Why are conventional QR codes vulnerable to sticker replacement?

A fraudulent black-and-white QR code can look almost identical to a legitimate one, especially when placed over another white QR square. StoryCodes are visually connected to the surrounding campaign creative, so an overlay is more likely to appear inconsistent, misaligned or visibly added afterwards.

Can someone copy or replace a StoryCode?

Our proprietary tool that creates StoryCodes is not available to the general public, so creating a StoryCode that looks like the original on a poster, a billboard or a physical surface is very difficult compared with just using a free QR code generator and making a black-and-white QR code.

What should brands do to protect physical QR campaigns?

Brands should combine distinctive creative with regular placement inspections, secure HTTPS destinations, restricted platform access, clear ownership of destination domains and a documented response process. Adding the expected domain beside the call to action can give audiences another way to verify the scan.

What happens if a destination becomes unsafe or a campaign is compromised?

When a StoryCode is routed through the Experience Platform, its destination can be changed or disabled without reprinting the physical creative. This can help a brand respond quickly to a compromised or incorrect destination. It does not help if an attacker has physically covered the StoryCode with an entirely different code, which is why placement inspection remains important.

Working with us

How long does a StoryCode take to produce?

It depends on the creative complexity and how many formats you need, but a single tested StoryCode is typically a matter of days rather than weeks. Bring us the deadline and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

Do you work with agencies?

Yes — as a production partner behind your brand, as the platform running the post-scan experience, or as an extra mechanic to bring into a pitch. See the For Agencies page for how those arrangements work.
